Nathaniel Lachenmeyer

Theophany

any dawn now
I may come upon you

yet I am confident
as I round again

the last familiar curve
on the rocky path

down to the river
to watch the mist

clear and of course the birds
there is always

satisfaction to be found
in watching birds

that is something I think
you might say if you exist

when we finally meet
you whom I have always

known by your absence
just as you they say

have known me in mine
and I will reply I have
had that thought as well
and then if time permits

you are I swear it just
as welcome as anyone

to stand with me
and watch the birds

skim across the mist
one more time

until both
until everything is gone
